"Hello" to all who read this. I am HOH and have been all my adult life and a majority of my friends are late-deafened, some HOH, some Deaf. My scenario is that I am dating a hearing guy who is a good guy. We met in the work environment. My Deaf friend also works with us. You see we all work for a very large printing company. The constant noise allows my friend and I to Sign. We get stares but that is the way we know we can communicate across the aisle from our workstations. Knowing that we can see each other and Sign is a nice comfort. I have been there over a year now and have always used ASL. Now with this new guy he justs wants me to stop, cold turkey! What is up with that? I need opinions, suggestions, ideas, feedback, anything to help me deal with this. I do Sign @ work but he just shakes his head "NO" like I am emabarrassing him. It's really making me reconsider dating the Hearing. Would you breakup and go back to dating within the Deaf Community?????????

Hi, I may not be the best person to give you advice because I am hearing but I do not think you should stay with someone who is embarrased by your use of ASL. I am trying to teach myself ASL from books and videos just because it's something that I really want to know. And I think that if he really cared about you he would want to learn ASL too, not try to discourage you from using it. Don't let him make you think that all of the hearing are like him though. Overall, just do what's best for you!
